Seeing the Dolomites has been on my bucket list for a while now.
The Dolomites is a mountain area in the northern Italy (also called South Tyrol). Tre Cime di Lavaredo which is the Italian name for Three Peaks is as the name describes three mountain peaks and is a part of the Dolomites.
We were determined on going on a hike in the beautiful surroundings and thought that a 10 km hiking trip was perfect, now that Ezrah was joining us.
Are you also dreaming about seeing the wonderful mountain cliffs in South Tyrol?
Then keep reading!
Ezrah woke up bright and early at 4 am. It was a bit earlier than expected but it gave us the opportunity to get a good start of the day. After packing the bags and getting the lunch boxes ready, we were ready to drive from our Airbnb which took us an hour. We stayed here.
Even the drive there was stunning, so we knew we had something good coming. At 7 am we were all ready at the starting point and exited to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet.
Like in so many other places, July is high season for tourists. There’s no doubt either, that this is a very popular hiking route, which we quickly noticed. After a short amount of time, we had company.
In the summer months it gets really warm, especially in the afternoon, we noticed that the temperature rose to 30 degrees. That’s another good reason for getting started before it gets too hot.
SO – start the hike as early in the day as possible (at least if you’re hiking in the summer months).
We chose to park at the nearest parking, which costs 30€ for a day. If you ask me, that’s kind of expensive but definitely worth it, especially if you’re travelling with kids. You’ll arrive to a payment booth, where it’s possible to pay with both cash and card. Hereafter continue up the mountain (about 10 minutes drive) and you’ll arrive to the parking lot and the Rifogio Auronzo cabin, where the hike will begin. Here you can find toilets but be aware that they first open at 8 am.
The most popular route is the 10 km trip around Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The most optimal is walking counterclockwise to get the best view of the three peaks and also get the best lightening.
It’s very different how much time the hike will take. We tried to research beforehand to get an idea, but without any good results. It took us 6 hours but at some point we got a bit off track. We turned down a path a bit too early and it took us a bit to get back on track again. We also had three stops where Martin flew the drone. Also snacks and lunch breaks, where one of them lasted almost an hour (the nature was so beautiful and idyllic that we simply just had to enjoy it to the fullest). Besides that, we stopped several times to take pictures.
On the hike you’ll find a cabin where you can fill up your bottles with fresh cold water. We were also greated by a herd of cows.
We didn’t see any signs with a drone ban and a lot of people had their drones with them. We likewise got some really cool shots with our drone. A beautiful and different perspective than otherwise.
-Bring a good carrier or wrap. We use one from Najell, which we’re very happy about. Find it here.
-Remember to bring lots of water, food and snacks. Smoothies is always a success especially in the warm weather. We actually brought oatmeal for Ezrah, as he didn’t get any breakfast before we left.
-Suuuuuunscreen and a sun hat not to forget. So important to take care of that sensitive baby skin. A thin long sleeved pair of clothing is also a good idea to cover up from the sun. Also remember it’s a bit cold early in the morning.
-An extra pair of clothing and diapers is pretty important as well, haha.
If you want that beautiful view of Tre Cime di Lavaredo as you see in many pictures on the internet, you’ll have to walk towards Dreizinnenhütte. The path to the cabin is a dead end, so you have to walk back the same way. For some reason we didn’t go there, which we really regret. I guess we just have an excuse to come back.
Last but not least…
A big recommendation to visit Tre Cime di Lavaredo and get a scenic experience. I hope that this post “Hiking at Tre Cime di Lavaredo” gave you some useful information.
